First Impression:
When I first opened the box that the jacket came in I thought that it seemed kind of thin. I have used soft shell jackets before that I purchased from Kohl’s and J.C. Penny. Their material is probably twice as thick. I noticed right away that the jacket fit very snuggly. If you have a “normal” build you’ll be fine ordering whatever size you regularly wear. For those of “larger” build I suggest ordering one size up. I was impressed with the integrated hood. Typically, integrated hoods are thin and are there simply to break the wind. This hood has the same fleece lining that is present everywhere else in the jacket.
Use and conditions:
I’ve worn the jacket for the past two weeks, regardless of temperature. I’ve been pleasantly surprised as to how warm the jacket has kept me, even when wearing just a t-shirt underneath. The jacket itself provides some insulation but not much. For field play I’d say that depending on temperature you’ll want to have some kind of polypro base layer (UnderArmour), with a knit thermal layer on top of that. If its really cold, put a turtleneck on over that and then the jacket. With all 4 layers I’d say you could easily stay warm outside for extended periods down to 5 or 10 degrees.
Updated Report:
So after a few more weeks i can officially say this thing is well worth the money. I wore this to the paramilitary xmas and OP: Test Fire. Both days it held up well and i stayed very warm. I only noticed it getting cold later in the day when the sun started to go down. Yesterday the temp outside my house registered as -1. With nothing but a sweater on underneath my upper body stayed toasty warm while shoveling my driveway. As for getting dirty. Its washed up nicely. All the stitching has held and insulation still feels fluffy. So far I give this a 10 our 10. With plenty of storage space and good weather protection its very much a good buy.
